- They feel an overwelming sense of being disoriented or confused in their bathroom or bedroom and therefore lack the motivation or self confidence to do these essential tasks.
- They simply forget to do or how to do these once familiar routine tasks.
- Label toiletry and kitchen cupboard/pantry items.
- Label dresser drawers and clothing in the closet. Sort and label closet clothing by items, such as "shirts", "pants", "sweaters", "jackets", etc.
- Label or place signs on appliances such as the wash machine and dryer to help your loved one use the appliance correctly.
- Post a sign on or near the clothes hamper or a laundry basket to help your loved one discard dirty clothing and ensure he or she wears fresh clothing each day.
- Place signs on room doors to help your loved one/care recipient recognize familiar places in their home.
- Use a dry erase marker board to post To Do Lists.
- Use reminder notes to help your loved one/care recipient keep track of important things like taking medications and doctor appointments.
- Use document organizers to maintain important paper work and medical records.
- Prevent wandering outdoors by placing a "Stop" sign on exit/entrance doors. Place "Do Not Enter" signs on basement doors or other rooms that your loved one shouldn't go in or that have stairways that could lead to a fall.
