How to Diagnose Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's is a degenerative form of dementia, but if caught early medical professionals can help slow your symptoms. Reading this article will teach you how Alzheimer's is diagnosed.

Suggestions

  1. Tell your doctor about your family and medical history. The first step in any diagnosis is to determine whether the cause of the disease is that or medical reasons or family. Your doctor will ask you about any past or current medical conditions and about any medications you are on regarding your medical history. The doctor will also ask you if any family member have had or still have Alzheimer's or a condition that may have lead to Alzheimer's. It is recommended that you be entirely truthful with your doctor when he or she is asking you these questions to allow the doctor to better assess your condition.
  2. Ask your doctor about regular physical examinations. A doctor may perform a physical examination to determine if you have Alzheimer's or a condition that leads to the disease. A physical examination can determine if any medical problems may be causing any of the symptoms you are having. Getting a physical is important and is recommended immediately, because immediate treatment may relieve and slow the progression of the symptoms you may be having.
  3. Ask your doctor to perform a mental assessment. A mental exam is the best way for a doctor to medically determine of you are having symptoms of Alzheimer's. During the mental exam, your doctor will usually test for memory, attention span and orientation. The doctor will take these factors and consider them along with age, education level and cultural background while looking over your test results. Again, it is very important for you to be truthful with your doctor when he or she asks you these questions, because it will help them better evaluate you and your condition.

Tip

  • Never wait in regards to Alzheimer's. If the disease is caught early, it can be treated to slow the progression of the disease.
